    Internet Connection

  • What are the system requirements needed to use Long Lines Internet services?

  • PCs running Windows 2000/XP/Vista are preferred. Windows 3.11 is not acceptable, we cannot offer software or support options for Windows 3.11.

  • A Pentium 2 Processor with at least 128 MB of RAM, CD-ROM, 50MB available hard disk space, a Network Card and/or a 56K modem. 14.4 modems are not supported.

Macintosh must be running system 10 or OsX with 128 MB of RAM, CD-ROM, 50 MB of available hard disk space, a Network Card and/or a 56K modem. 14.4 modems are not supported.

  •

  • Can I have Long Lines Internet on two computers?

Yes. However if you are using Dial-up these systems cannot be logged in at the same time. You would have to purchase an additional fold dial-up account at regular monthly rates to allow two systems simultaneous connections. With high-speed Internet you can have multiple systems.

Do I still have to pay for service if my computer, modem or settings are not working?

  • Think of our Internet services like a utility, such as Telephone or Cable TV. If you use it or not, it is still there and you pay for it unless you want it disconnected. Likewise, with your Internet account, you may not be actively dialing into it, but it is costing us server resources and disk space, not to mention still collecting your Email and hosting your web pages.

  • It is the customer's responsibility to seek the appropriate help if their computer and/or hardware is not working. It is the user's responsibility to report any connection problems in a timely order since we do not know if you are having problems or not. There will be no grace periods or fee reductions during the time you are unable to access Long Lines Internet due to a hardware or software problem on your end.

  •

    Troubleshooting Frequent Disconnect Problems

Occasionally Long Lines customers report to us problems related to unexpectedly losing their dial-up connection. Nearly everyone who gets Internet access via their phone line and modem experience this problem at one time or another. There are many things that can cause a modem to drop the on-line connection and troubleshooting this type of problem can often be difficult and frustrating. But with a systematic approach we can usually figure out the cause.

How do I disable Call Waiting?

When using dial-up networking, you can disable Call Waiting from the Dialing Properties button on the Connect To screen.

    Email

    What is my email address?

Your email address is usually your username, the @ symbol, then longlines.com.
For instance your email address would be your: username@longlines.com; An example of this would be webmaster@longlines.com

How do I find a friend's Email address?

There are a number of services on the Internet that act as email "White Pages" -- although there is no single master source for this information. Here are a few of the more popular sites:

    • Yahoo's People Search
    • Internet Address Finder
    • Four-11 / LookUp

What if your friend/relative is not listed?

Our best recommendation is to call them and ask them for their email address. Long Lines Internet will not give out someone's email address if asked.

Why can't people reply to the Email I send them?

If people you send messages to can't reply to you, your reply-to address in your Email software may be wrong. If the address is incomplete or otherwise incorrect, people won't be able to return messages to you by using the Reply command in their mail program. Please go to the main support page for assistance on your specific email software.

Why was the Email message I sent returned?

Electronic mail typically bounces for one of two reasons:

    1. Host unknown - The site you're mailing to may not exist. The site (the part of the email address after the @ sign) must be a valid Internet site, and must be spelled correctly. If the host you specified in the email address can't be found, your message has no destination and must be bounced back to you. When this happens, double-check the destination email address and try to resend your message to the right place.
    2. User unknown - The other likely reason your email may bounce is this: although the destination site (the part after the @ sign) is valid, there is no username that answers to the name you specified. (The username is the part of the email address that comes before the @ sign.) When this happens, double-check the username of your intended recipient and resend your message. Usernames must be spelled correctly and are usually case-sensitive (USERNAME@someplace.com is not always the same as username@someplace.com).

Can my email password be different from my login password?

No. Your account does have two passwords - the login password and the email password. However, your mail and login password MUST remain the same for systems and accounting reasons.

How do I get all of my email forwarded to another email address?

If you would like your email to be forwarded to some other email address, there is a simple solution. Simply create a text file in any text editor (Notepad, Word, etc.). The email address that your mail will be forwarded to is the only text to be included in this file. Name the file whatever you like; we'll call it forward.txt for example. Now use your FTP client to upload that file to your directory on the Long Lines server. Once the file is on the sever, rename it to ".forward". Your mail will now be forwarded to the address specified in the .forward file.

Then hit Save. It will take several minutes to download and when it's done there will be a new icon on the desktop.
Double click on this and the setup will begin.
After the setup has finished you will have to run the program from Start, Programs and WSFTP.

    USING WSFTP

It will not have the profile name listed as Long Lines... Just click on NEW and fill it in with this information:

This is your hard drive.... As you can see the location is in the Program Files directory. You need to change to the directory that your images are located in. Simply click the little green arrow located near the top of window. The easiest way to find your stuff is to go all the way to C:\ and then go to the correct folder.

The right side of the screen will show the remote system.

You need to create a public_html directory on the right side.
Hit the MKDIR button on the right.
Type in public_html and hit OK.
It will then appear in the main right box.

Now double click on the public_html listing. It will take you to that area.

This is where your files have to be so the world can see them.

In the middle of the two windows is the upload and download buttons.

The button on the bottom pointing to the right is the upload feature.

This is the one that you will use!!!!!

So to send files you simply click ONCE on the file on the left box and then click the upload arrow. The file is uploaded.
